about

骨折 was recorded on my second trip to Tokyo in 2009. I was invited to play at the Pacific Rim Festival and I needed to bring an instrument and a system that was very compact yet extremely flexible. All of these pieces were written in my small Japanese apartment over the course of two weeks, using many small 'preparations', like springs, chopsticks, paper clips, paintbrush, nail file, ball bering, bolt, zip tie, tuning fork and an ebow. Having recently seen a Gagaku performance, I wanted to capture the essence of the philosophy, focusing on timbre, rather than pitch, without copying it outright. Other Japanese ideas important to the arts such as, Jo-Ha-Kyu were important mental and physical parameters in building this album.
